Saratoga Child Custody Lawyer Discusses Your Spouse Giving the Kids Away for Adoption

Question:

My ex disappeared with my kids in the late 80s. I received a court order to pay back child support to her earlier this year. Just a few days ago, 2 of my children showed up at my door with questions about why we gave them up for adoption. I learned they were in foster care for 7 yrs, and then adopted. I never signed anything relinquishing my rights, and I have been paying child support directly to my ex, due to not knowing this. What are my legal options? I would have taken custody of my children if the state had come to me about my parental rights to them.

Answer:

You should promptly consult with a Saratoga Child Custody Lawyer and bring all of the paperwork that you do have for that attorney to review. Whether you have any recourse with regard to the funds that you have paid, the order for back support, and the adoption depends on what happened in the various courts that issued the orders of support and adoption.
